宇治野宗輝為當代「聲音雕塑」領域中極具代表性的日籍藝術家,以老舊或淘汰的家電為主要素材,放大你我生活中常被忽略的聲音與節奏,同時裝置本身也以隱喻手法省思人類自二十世紀以來的物質文明以及二十一世紀的消費文化。

此次展出的《The District of Plywood City》為藝術家著名的The Rotators系列新作,從吹風機、果汁機、到電鑽,這些家電不在大賣場的架上,也不在家中熟悉的位置,反而組成一支無人演奏的全自動樂團,樂團的「首腦」則是一組改裝過的黑膠唱片與唱盤。此件聲音雕塑在大安56的空間,讓這些家電「團員」得再次回歸久違的生活場域,更直接地與空間對話,回應藝術家的創作脈絡。


Forming a new piece for his “The Rotators” series, UJINO combines wood crates to create a sound sculpture named The District of Plywood City as an analogy for wooden architecture.

Born in 2004, The Rotators project features advanced forms of sound sculptures. It is an automatic rhythm playing system that consists of motor-driven electric appliances orchestrated by the Rotatorhead, or a unit of modified record turntables and vinyl discs. From hairdryers, blenders, to power drills, a variety of electronic appliances are integrated as a sound unit using rock’n roll technologies to simulate an electric machine band.

Through his work, he tries to sum up the material civilization of the 20th century and critically project an interpretation of the world. Likening today’s society of mass consumption as Naturalism, UJINO portrays this theme through assembling a mass of products that were born and completed in the middle of consumerism during the 21st century.
