The kitchen is a place that always smells homey and cozy, filled with the flavors and tastes once enjoyed by the family.
In Big Steamer in the Kitchen, artist Yu Wen-Fu depicts an idle kitchen full of memories that is recreated with his viewers’ imaginations. At the kitchen’s entrance visitors are humbled by the oversized Zheng-Long (bamboo steamer), a cookware traditionally found in many Chinese households. Its massive size hints that the viewer has shrunk to the size of the food usually found inside it. In this sense, the artist wants his audience to envision their mother’s specialty dishes; from Zongzi (glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves) to aromatic buns; from fried radish cake to sweet and salty fagao (Chinese cupcake); and to remind them of the days of joyful family gatherings.
While the space is filled with the woven bamboo pieces of the gigantic steamer, visitors will be tempted to peek through its gaps to search and reminisce about the smells that were once so close to home. |
