The 2010 Very Fun Park - Taipei East Side Contemporary Art Festival has just come to an end in September and is immediately moving to the beautiful campus of National Cheng Chi University in Wenshan District on the south side of Taipei City on October 12.
Steering away from its original shopping style exhibition layout and featuring artist workshops, this is the first time Very Fun Park has been held on a campus. This event coincides with students returning to school and was arranged so that the students would run into contemporary art exhibitions at unexpected intervals. Through direct and spontaneous ways, curators of this exhibition compose a very different experience. Beyond the art center, the displays are extended into the campus, administrative building computer center, business school building, library, and everywhere else. It is an attempt to let the students and faculty members of the National Cheng Chi University discover the Very Fun Park and spice up campus life with new and interesting topics. We thank the ingenious Arts Center and President of the university, Dr. Wu Se-Hwa for the support.
National Cheng Chi University has been established for over 80 years and is renowned for its education in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Over the years, the school has developed numerous talents and many of them are highly influential in the political, commercial and mass communication fields. Though the campus seems to be somewhat remote from the city center, the beautiful mountains and waters create a tranquil world nestled in the embraces of the nature. The campus, leaning against the hills, provides a space for three-dimensional imagination and the task of arranging the exhibition spots along the hills to echo the forms of the spaces was a new experience for the curators.
The attempt of Very Fun Park to reach campuses will make its debut at the National Cheng Chi University. I expect this event to be a warm-up that will extend into many possibilities. Maybe even the foundation's dream of linking an alliance of college art centers into a network will come true in the near future and serve as an advocate for art education. In this event, I expect that through the creativity of the 18 artists exhibited in this event, the composition of a wall-less art museum onto the background of a campus will allow enthusiastic young students to meet with the fun, colorful, accessible and interactive arts. So, have fun coming back to school.
